The future for consoles, according to some developers

Hi gamers,

You may recall the Video Game trip I went with my study group. While talking to the developers at the Q&A, they said after next generation consoles there will be no more, instead an online database and playing games directly online. This means no download, no additional hardware from your TV. Much like playing games directly from your browser in today's Internet games.
This would also mean, buying games from stores will be a thing of the past, also would game hardware (maybe apart from a controller of some sort). You'll most likely be buying subscriptions to play these games much like the MMOs and XBOX Live with this generation of gaming

And yes, these are the words that they passed onto us, whether or not this does become true it's in the far far future maybe 10 years from now 5 years per generation as most consoles are now-a-days.
This is surprisingly hard to believe from my point of view, think about it.. a normal/updated TV set-top box being able to stream games without any lag, no download nothing and all your data like save games and details are on a massive massive super server, pumping out visuals even better than today's consoles and computer video cards. When I heard that I thought "Wow, these set-top boxes must have a lot of RAM"
It seems pretty stressful for the server especially if most of the population will be streaming straight from it, together with no local files from any players.

Who knows in 10-15 years time, this may all be possible. Found this very interesting, and thought I'd share it ^_^

This is HeXiGON signing out.

  1. As you know there is a service that provides this already and it works to a certain degree so there is definitely foundations to build on it. 10-15 years is max time that this will be the trend.
